Abreu Leads Local Racers Against World of Outlaws

Has Three Wins In Early Season Hot Streak

CALISTOGA——Fresh from his win on the World of Outlaws sprint car tour last weekend in Tulare, Napa Valley driver Rico Abreu has established himself as an odds-on favorite for another victory when the national series visits his home track, Calistoga Speedway, on Saturday and Sunday April 5, 6.

Since returning from mid-winter racing in Australia, Abreu has started the 2014 season on a hot streak, claiming three wins in three different series in little more than a month, including a victory in Arizona on the ASCS national sprint car tour and claiming the Silver Cup at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico two weeks ago.

But the victory in Tulare, coming against the best sprint car drivers in the United States, ranks as one of the biggest of his young career.  Abreu started third after a strong qualifying effort, took the lead on lap eight, and turned back challenges from the rest of the field on three restarts in the last half of the race to claim his career first win in that series.

“That was incredible,” said Abreu about the win.  “The pressure was huge,” he said, about lining up wheel to wheel with some of the nation’s best sprint car drivers.  “When you race with the Outlaws, you can’t over-think things and that’s what I tend to do.  I started slowing everything down, like my breathing and my arms, and that was the key to winning that race,” he said.

Abreu will be leading a contingent of west coast drivers looking for victory against the World of Outlaws travelling teams that include drivers who cut their racing teeth in Northern California before joining the national tour.   It will be a strong homecoming for drivers such as Paul McMahon, who began his career at Calistoga Speedway before moving to Nashville, Tn.   McMahan leads the national championship ranking over two drivers, Darryn Pittman and Donny Schatz, who between them have won the last six WoO titles.

Also returning to Northern California is former Sacramentan Brad Sweet, sitting fifth in the WoO national points chase driving for NASCAR star Casey Kahne.

A full racing program is scheduled for both days of the WoO doubleheader, including heat races, a dash among the 10 fastest drivers to determine the starting order for the first five rows of the main event, and a 30 lap main event both nights.
